British fashion is self-confident and fearless. It refuses to bow to commerce, thus generating a constant flow of new ideas whilst drawing in British heritage. – Alexander McQueen
East Londoner Alexander McQueen didn’t begin his life with an abundance of contacts in the fashion community. It was his impressive creativeness combined with his indisputable strengths as a designer that put him on an accelerated journey to popularity. Acclaimed as one of the most inspired designers of his time, style icon Alexander McQueen was well known for his theatrical runway shows that elevated fashion to the level of art.
His notoriety was to some extent built on his reluctance to conform to the norm. Apart from his rebellious nature, what also earned Alexander McQueen a dedicated following was his ability to cut clothing like no other. Before graduating with a master’s from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, Alexander McQueen gained experience at Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard. There was also a brief period at costumier Angels and Berman which further developed the importance of attention to detail in Alexander McQueen.
